“The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Many a man proclaims his steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?
The righteous who walks in his integrity – blessed are his children after him.”
Proverbs 20:5-7 ESV

What are some ways a wife can pray for her husband? These verses from Proverbs give a great outline. Here we see three specific ways a wife can pray for her  husband. She can pray he is…

1. A man of understanding.

In our work with married couples we often encounter situations where a wife doesn’t feel like her husband “gets her.” he isn’t communicating well or she isn’t experiencing empathy from her husband. Whatever the scenario, pray for your husband to see situations and you through the eyes of Jesus. Pray that God reveals to him the deeper meanings behind the emotions that are present in the family. Why is this child upset? What did his wife experience that day?

Any man who can truly identify with another person’s feelings or circumstances, grows in godly wisdom, discernment, and understanding. A husband who does this will consistently make better decisions.

2. A man of faithfulness.

Being a man of faithfulness encompasses many aspects of a husband and father’s life. For example, you can pray for your husband to be faithful at his job. Ask God to motivate him to work hard and do his best. Faithfulness extends to his children as well. Pray that he is an involved and present father; one who has insights into his children’s talents and struggles. And of course, pray for your husband’s commitment to your marriage. According to the Institute for Family Studies, 20% of all married men admit to sexual infidelity. So pray for your husband’s purity and for your marriage to grow stronger. Pray he is faithful to his commitments – his wedding vows, church attendance, work, friends, family, and his relationship with God.

3. A man of integrity.

Have you ever thought about what you would do in different settings if no one could see you? It’s an interesting question and yet, it’s not entirely accurate. SomeONE does see you. All the time. Every day. Every thought. Every action. Every word.  A husband with integrity is consistently upright because he recognizes that God sees all that he says and does. He doesn’t waiver and he is pure (not perfect) in all aspects of his life. Ask your heavenly Father to strengthen your husband’s desire to be truthful and honest.

Proverbs 12:22 says, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” This verse indicates that honesty and trustworthiness go hand in hand. As such, pray for your husband to love truth – especially God’s Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal truths to him that he can pass on to his children as he studies the Bible. When your husband exemplifies integrity, your children are blessed. Your prayers for your husband are a great way to honor him this Father’s Day and Build Your Marriage.
